New to Hiking? Avoid These 5 Rookie Mistakes

By: James Patel, Trail Guide & Hiking Coach

If you're new to hiking, welcome to the club! You're gonna love it. But before you lace up those brand-new boots, let me help you avoid some of the goofy (but totally normal) mistakes I made when I started out:

1. Overpacking like I was moving into the woods.Granola bars for a week? A full-size shampoo bottle? I’ve been there. Pack light—your back will thank you.

2. Underestimating the weather.Clear skies at the start don’t guarantee smooth sailing. Always bring an extra layer and something rainproof, just in case.

3. Ignoring water.Never skimp on hydration. Bring more water than you think you need. Your future, less-dehydrated self will appreciate it.

4. Wearing the wrong shoes.Fashion hiking is not a thing. Invest in real hiking shoes or boots with grip and support. Your ankles are VIPs—treat them like it.

5. Forgetting to enjoy it.Don't get so focused on the destination that you miss the little things: the light through the trees, the birds, the way your stress melts away.
